Our Covenant with God
God has offered a covenant for anybody who is willing to believe and live for Him. A covenant is a binding agreement between two parties that produces benefits for each one involved. A covenant is a relationship of attachment where each side must consider the other when making decisions. Marriage is the most recognizable covenant in our society today. A husband and wife are in covenant together and that means that each of them should consider the other when making decisions in life. I am married and what if I went out and sold the house my wife and I live in without telling her? What if my wife came home one day and I had sold all the furniture without letting her know? What would happen? Our relationship would suffer because I was making decisions without considering her. That same thing can happen in our relationship with the Lord. If we start living a life that does not include Him in our decisions, our life will suffer as a result.
God’s desire and purposes from the beginning was to be in a covenant relationship with mankind. He wants so desperately to have that union with His most beloved creation; humanity. To fulfill this plan God has offered a covenant with mankind. Almighty God wants to have a marriage like relationship with us. One where we consider Him in everything we do. Why would God want such a thing with us? In a marriage the man and the woman are equals and are in love with each other. In a covenant with God, mankind is clearly not equal. Humanity is depraved and capable of so much evil yet God still wants this relationship with us.
God originally approached mankind through a man named Abram to enter into covenant with the entire race. In Genesis 12:2-3 God vows to Abram, “And I will make of you a great nation, and I WILL BLESS YOU, and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing…AND IN YOU SHALL ALL FAMILIES OF THE EARTH BE BLESSED.” Do we see what is going on here? Almighty, Righteous God approaches a weak, sinful, depraved man and immediately reveals His plan. God’s plan from the beginning is to bless mankind and provide a beneficial relationship to him. We see here that there is incredible benefit to being in covenant with Almighty God. Imagine if your father was the richest man on earth? Would that ease your mind about some things? You wouldn’t worry about how you were going to get by in life. You would trust that your father would meet your needs and then some. How much more should Christians trust their Heavenly Father? If I make decisions that consider God in all things, I can trust that He will meet my needs exceedingly. Why? Because He and I are in covenant together.
