Praying for Our Government

Praying for Our Government

So many people are blasé about praying for our politicians.  They would rather pray for their own needs and seek people to pray about their endeavors.  When is the last time you asked somebody, “What are you believing for?” or “What in your life can I pray for?”  Most of the time Christians only ask for themselves.  If people won’t even pray for their neighbors, then why could we assume that they are praying for the government?  Here is the fact:  The decisions that these government leaders are making do affect you.  They are trying to shape the future for your children.  The decisions that are made in government will affect your freedom and ability to do business.  Their decisions are affecting your prosperity and that which you can hand over to your children.  Most of all, their decisions affect the free course the gospel needs to effectively be seen and heard.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 says, “I exhort therefore that, FIRST OF ALL, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men:  for kings, and for all that are in (civil) authority…”  The Bible says FIRST OF ALL that we should pray for government but we have seemly replaced those words with “not at all.”  We can’t take a “first of all” and let it be a “not at all” and expect to get blessed.  Churches that do not actively pray for government will dry up.  It is a priority with God therefore it should be a priority with His Church.  The Church should be the unseen hero behind all successful government.

First, we must pray that wickedness be removed from our government.  Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”  We must pray that the reproach that has been brought upon our nation by ungodly leadership be removed.  We must pray that godliness and honesty would again prevail in the highest offices.  Proverbs 25:5 says, “Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.”  We must pray that those wicked lobbyist and voices of negative influence be removed from our representatives.  We must take our place in prayer and forbid those evil associations to be around our President and Supreme Court justices.

Second, we must pray that the hearts of our leadership be changed.  Proverbs 21:1 says, “The heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord… He turns it wherever He wills.”  We need to petition God to witness to the heart of these politicians to make policies and laws that are just and promote the welfare and freedom of the people.

Third, we must pray that God would protect our leadership.  And finally, we need to go to God and thank Him on behalf of our government.  Many of our leaders will not bow their knees and honor God so we must do that for them.  Give God thanks for the mercy He has shown to our political leaders.
