Principles that Govern a Home
Before we get into the specifics of living right in the home, it will be important to understand some general principles. No matter who you are and where you come from these principles will govern your home whether you like it or not. Like gravity is a physical law, these laws are spiritually binding and you cannot reverse them.
Principle #1- Your home is a reproduction of the condition of your heart. Hebrews 3:4 says, “For every house is built (or governed) by some man…” Every home is being ruled by somebody’s standards. The condition of your heart will be reflected in your home. If your home is filled with strife and chaos then there are unsettled issues in the hearts of those that govern. If your heart is out of order with God, then your home will be out of order. Your home is a good measuring tape of how spiritual, peaceful, and organized you are. Every home is being ruled or neglected by somebody.
If you are going to put a broken home back together then those in charge have to take responsibility. Parents are blaming their teenagers for destroying the peace of their home. It’s not the fault of the children; it’s the fault of the parents. Leadership must first take responsibility if things are going to be different. Your home will only change when your character changes. Sin is the mother of all disorder. Moral excellence in home leadership is the only hope for families needing a fresh start.
Principle #2- Every home that has any other standard than the Word of God will collapse under the pressures of life. Psalms 127:1 says, “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it…” Many people reject the Biblical model for their home. They prefer to let the standards of the times determine how they raise their children. Just because certain practices are followed by the mainstream doesn’t make it right. Actually, the mainstream is a dangerous model to follow. When you adopt another set of principles then you are rejecting God’s architectural design for the home. If you throw out God’s blueprint then there is little hope that things will stand.
Your personal feelings were never designed to carry the weight of the circumstances of life. God’s Word alone can handle that load. When you build in vain then ruin is imminent in the home. You can spend a lifetime of effort trying to build a home only to watch it fall in ruin if you think you can lead a home apart from the scriptures. A house can crumble at its foundation regardless of how fashionable the furniture is. People are chasing every hobby, material possession, and extracurricular activity and forgetting that their home life is only as strong as the principles that rule there.
